Scorecard

The Village Greenies 1st XI pulled off a memorable victory against the star-studded By-Rite side in the final round of the Cayman 20/20 at Smith Road Oval on Sunday.  It is the fourth time in succession Greenies 1sts have beaten the once unbeatable By-Rite side, who take to the field with 5 or 6 national team players each week. The Greenies went against convention by winning the toss and choosing to bat, the pre-match plan to fight fire with fire against the aggressive fast bowling attack of Tulloch, Taylor and Wright.

Wright was bowling with a stiff wind at his back and from ball one, his onslaught of short pitch bowling had malice and intent. He removed Tommy, who had been in great form leading into the match, with a bouncer that was hooked sky-ward. Watto contributed a whirlwind 16 off 11 balls featuring his customary array of irregular strokes. After both he and Rupert were removed by Wright yorkers, Ledger walking to the crease knowing only 3 balls of the Wright spell required negotiation.

The first ball struck Ledger in the chest, halting the game for several minutes while he sought treatment. The following ball, a screaming yorker, sent the stumps flying and Greenies into bother.

When Monico was dismissed the following over for 26, the Greenies had slumped to 5-59 and in trouble despite maintaining a run rate of toward 7 per over.

The day would be saved by Sean Cameron, demoted from his usual opening position to number 7. Cameron would finish the day out for 38 off 32 balls with 5 boundaries and taking a special liking to the bowling of Troy Taylor. The innings was scored under the most intense of pressure and provides a major boost to the Greenies for the coming season as well as something further for By-Rite and other sides to ponder.

Chris Smith, with 14, played his usual supporting role with an innings that featured him successfully negotiating his way under a short-pitched free hit delivery.  Matty Glyde made an exhausting 16 not out and got the Greenies to an impressive total of 145 from the allotted 20 overs.

It was great to see the Greenies sit down before a match and come up with a plan and to execute it against the best bowling on the island was something special.

As always the Greenies would ensure that finger nails would be bitten down to the bone as the second half of the match was always going to be anything but a formality.

Rupert opened with his usual venom and bowled as fearful a bouncer as will be seen on the island this year. His wicket of Edwards was taken after being no balled the preceding delivery. The batsmen believed he had a free hit and only after being bowled did he find out that the no ball was due to bowling around the wicket and not a front foot infringement.

Ledger recovered from his batting mishaps with three wickets including the vital dismissal of opener Hall for 40 off 42 balls.

By-Rite’s Wright threatened to take the game away from the Greenies with some massive hitting before he became one of Wrendon’s two wickets, out for 34 off 17 balls including much tap given to the Greenies skipper.

In the end By-Rite needed 13 from the final over and Wrendon’s second wicket provided for a memorable victory for those involved and those whose attendance we so appreciate.
