The last game of the
season played a few weeks back saw Greenies Too pitted against the league
leaders, Esso Cubs. Someone must have videoed the match and sent it on to
the England squad before the Headingley test as they stole the story line almost
word for word. Winning the toss, we decided to bat first and were all out
for around 100 (sounding familiar yet?). Some pretty ordinary
batting did not help, but credit must go to the Cubs opening bowling
attack – Ebanks was consistently hostile, picking up some early wickets and was
backed up well by Cato Snr. After this they were pretty rank, but
psychologically the damage had been done. With such a small target
to defend, we needed some quick wickets. A small glimmer of hope came in
when young Cato was caught with Carey’s first ball in the second over (again, a
Headingley moment), but an onslaught of batting by Sealy and Ebanks put paid to
our chances and they wrapped things up in the 15th over, not before
Sealy was well caught by Geoff off John King with a couple of runs
remaining. Not a great end to the season, but a very enjoyable season not
the less.
Looknig at the season stats, some pretty average averages on the batting front that
underlies what I believe to be our main problem. Kudos to Simon, Tex and Watto
for making 50’s, and well done to Marc Randall for topping the averages in his
first season. Bowling-wise, another good season by McGrath, capped by
taking his first five-for, and also Troskie, who will be missed next season and
was unlucky not to get 2 five-fors. Also some good performances by Randall,
Tasker and others that meant we were generally competitive in the
field.
Much to work on for next season, but
I think a win/lose ratio of 5:4 is pretty good, and I was hugely proud of the
spirit and the manner in which we played. I would also like to pay tribute
to the supporters who turned out to make game days so
enjoyable.
