In a
piss-poor performance we comprehensively wrestled defeat from victory against
lowly ranked Esso for the 3rd time in as many matches. I had a good
blast which was as much a venting for a disappointing season that is all but
mathematically over than just a knee jerk reaction.
Fact
of the matter we just have not been able to put a team on the field nor get
enough guys keen enough to train and maintain the required level of fitness. To
win you must first have the desire to win, not just show up. To look around the
faces when we came off after just 40 overs with a nice breeze and see lots of
heads down was very disheartening and to hear a comment from a batsmen in the
field while still out there basically saying we can’t make these runs was
nothing short of repulsive to me. Personally I was pissed I could not bat when a
Dad's Army attack was offering a buffet century.
Cricket is cricket and nothing went our way in the field and a
couple of run outs did not help our own cause so we will rebound next when we
play in 2 weeks time against Paramount.
All
match stats above provided by Dicky tell the story. Under-manned and with Tommy
to catch a plane, we sent them in to bat on the most batsman friendly pitch
yet and a quick outfield at JPO (outfield may be a bit of a euphemism for
goatyard). They made the most of their chances (which were many) but not due to
drops - balls just did not go to hand. A typically quickfire 45 from
Frankie included a six which nearly put Charlie Quin in the hospital and had
frantic packing away of computers in the scorebox. 20 came off my last over
by big Cato which boosted their score to 238 off 40 when in reality they batted
horribly and our fielding was not too bad, a few too many extras
maybe.
With
Tommy on a 5pm flight and just 10 overs to bat he went out like a man possessed
and smashed 46 off just 20 balls to get us away to a flyer, hitting 3 sixes
which were all quality and one off his pads over square leg was maybe the
biggest six seen at JPO. After a lengthy delay when that ball was lost a brand
new ball was produced and our fortunes reversed with him being caught next ball
and the gradual slide began until we ended up behind the 8 ball after being way
up on our opponents. Paul Monico again was very solid in making 45 and Chris
Smith again continued his good form with 46. But in the end we were short
batsmen and could not make it across the line.
MVP: Tommy Stevens - 46
in 20 balls
Play of the Day: Tommy - huge six pulled over backward
square leg
COTD: Watto for his run out attempt
