Scorecard
Greenies Too played Esso Cubs in the opening match of the
year, hoping to knock off last years premiers and get a great start to the
season.
After the rain overnight the match was delayed as the covers
had leaked and most of the Greenies showed great restraint to leave the beers on
ice until the start of play. Eventually we were told we had a 24 over match and
batted first after I lost the first toss of the season.
With a team that could in theory bat down to number 9, we started
pretty horribly, lost consistent wickets and struggled to find singles to keep
the run-rate ticking along. After
being about 9-75, we got a few runs towards the end to post a paltry 92, with
myself getting 29 in the middle order and Paul Smith debuting with 24. No-one else scored
above 10, so the fine bottle was half booked up by this
stage.
Sensing that we may only be in the field for about half an hour, we
unleashed Red & Jerry on unsuspecting Esso, with Red uprooting an off stump
with a massive in-swinger in his first over. The other opener smashed a decapitator to
Watto off Jerry and they were 2 down for less than
10.
McGrath and Watto then performed in tandem to restrict runs and
take 2 wickets each to have Esso reeling at 6 for 66. Randall and Jonty then tried to pull off
an amazing win however Esso won with 2 wickets and 8 balls to spare. Special mention to Dicky for having to
leave the field of play and miss the fine session as he dislocated his finger
whilst keeping. He was fined accordingly upon arrival at
Stingers.
Our fielding performance was one of best ive
seen by any Greenies team and we were very unlucky to lose, I have very high
hopes for the rest of the season.
MOTM - Texas for making 29
POTD - Watto's catch
COTD - Jerry for a golden duck and a beamer.
