Last Sunday, March 15th,
was an exciting day for Women’s hardball Cricket being the first ever in Cayman
for the ladies to take the pitch for an exhibition tournament and to open up the
season. The day started off with a bit of a worry due to bad weather during the
open ceremony but we were able to continue under the tents provided. The
Governor of Cayman was there to kick off the event and to meet and greet the
three ladies teams.
After an hour delay due to pitch condition, the
Greenie Ladies opened up the first game against the Stingray Ladies. We lost the coin toss and the Stingrays
took the field while Anne and Drew opened up the batting. The first match of the day was all about just getting out there and
playing in a competitive setting and getting a feel for the game. The greenies
finished up the batting with 30 runs, but it was not enough for victory against
the Stingrays, who took the match by one run in the second over.
The Greenie Ladies played back to back games,
facing the Esso Ladies next. This
time we won the toss and took the field and opening with Carol Ann for the
bowling. The greenies did well in
the field, but gave out 39 runs due to wides, giving Esso a 76 run lead. Opening
up the batting for the Greenies was Vicky and Carol Ann. Everyone was able to get a chance to bat
and bowl the first two matches which is what we were hoping for to let all the
girls get a chance to play and experience there first cricket match. We were not able to win against Esso,
ending the match 76-44.
We were able to re-group (drink a few greens) and get a
break for lunch before our next match! The Stingrays and Esso took the field
after lunch which allowed us to check out what 18 months of practicing could do
for the Greenie Ladies!
Our last two matches improved throughout the day. We played
both teams again, losing by only 13 runs to the Stingrays with a final score of
59-46, and the last match of the day against Esso managing another close score
of 58-41.
The day came to an end with a quick closing ceremony and
presentation of medals to all teams, and in true greenie form, the fine session
took place after all was said and done. Player of the Day was rewarded to Drew
for her outstanding performance throughout day for her bowling and making 57
runs in total (though I think she needs to practice her sculling technique!)
There were many other fines given out, which by the end of the session everyone
in the stands had at least one (or many more), including all our great
supporters who came out throughout the day which made the day even more special!
Thanks to everyone for coming
out and being there for us!! We hope to see you at many more Greenie Ladies
Matches to come!!!
All in all we had so much fun and it was a great learning
experience, and we look forward to building a great team for the many seasons to
come!
