Fine Session

Greenies Toos took on Oneness on Saturday in what was expected to be a confidence booster for us, but also an important game to ensure we avoid relegation at year's end. With a few clouds and a nice airport-pavilion breeze, I finally won a toss and had no hesitation in choosing to bat, with Oneness only having nine players, although they cunningly dressed exactly the same as the umpires. Wetherell, after he finally arrived at 11:55am with a stinking hangover/still drunk and Dicky opened the batting and immediately started well, scoring at a run a ball, with Dicky turning over the strike to Simon so he could wield the axe. When Simon departed for 24 off 16, Dicky started to pick up the run-rate, until he was bowled for 35 off 54. Porter and I then continued to play ourselves in until we were 2-120 off 20, when we then upped the run rate to 8 an over until I got bowled for 59 off 36 with the score 3 for 202 off 27 overs. Porter then got run out by Wareo for a well made 56 off 69 balls and then Wareo ran himself out for 9 off 17, a tad slow considering the pies being thrown down. Dreadsy and Smith then crept us closer to the 300 mark, along with Nick Quin. Jeffers went out a the end and clubbed 23 off 8 balls, to ensure we smashed 300, with Dreadsy also carving 4 fours and a 6 to finish on 47 not out off 35 balls. Final total - 326-7 off 40 overs.  In my five years on island I have never seen Greenies make 250, let alone 300 - a magnificent effort!

With what could be described as a fairly non threatening opening bowling attack of Jerry and Jeffers, Jerry ripped in a beamer first ball, which not only cost him his first warning, it also went for three runs.  After 4 overs, they were 1 for 29, largely due to extras and a few edges.  After 4 wayward overs, Jeffers was dragged and McGrath came on, to get a wicket first ball and essentially bamboozle the batsmen completely, even with full tosses. He ended up with 5 for 6 off 4 overs - an unbelievable effort, although the batting was horrific… at best. Jerry bowled out his eight overs, coming back from his 11 run first over to finish with 1-21, a tidy performance and unlucky not to get a few more wickets. Wareo came on and bowled one horrible full toss, which hit middle stump and it was game over. Oneness all out for 57, a 269 run win to the Greenies. YES, 269 RUNS.

With a pre 5pm finish, the fine session was always going to be big, with the backup fine bottle being opened and finished off with the sun still high in the sky. More beers were called for from the bottleo and by the time we left the ground my car was having a sleepover. Stingers was large, Coconut Joes was hazy and Sunday morning was horrible, especially considering the Aussies got beaten by the Poms.

MOTM - McGrath - 5 for 6 off 4 overs
POTD - One of my sixes
COTD - Jeffers - 11 wides and 1 moment of unnecessary exhibitionism
