It was a slightly disappointing batting display
which let us down with most batsman having enough balls to get in then losing
their wicket. Having said that there were plenty of encouraging signs with Jacko
back amongst the runs with 60 odd and Chris Smith probably played his best
innings to date for first grade with a well compiled 30 not out. Tom also looked
in very good touch and played with the necessary intensity before catching an
edge. Craig Scott and Paul were probably both unlucky to be given LBW. My
rubbish excepted, all the bowlers did very well to keep us in the game as long
as we did on a pitch which, once dried out, had absolutely nothing to offer the
bowlers. Wickets were equally shared with Hector picking up 2. The fielding was
also very good with the 2 guys covered in blood (for which they were slightly
harshly fined for) Chris Smith and Paul Monico the standouts.
Overall it was one of those days when nothing
went our way – but then again that is cricket and we were probably a little
guilty of not making things happen.
The worrisome thing for me is that we were well
aware of our history of starting the season half asleep and that continued. So
let’s heed the wake up call and rebound strongly for our next match against the
defending champs Prison in 2 weeks time. Nets again Wednesday as usual and
centre wicket practice at West Bay Primary on Sunday 9.30am for first grade as
we spoke about post match.
MVP – Jacko
Play of the day – Hector for bowling a rippa of a yorker to
clean I no longer recall up.
COTD – Tom – for explaining the running on the wicket law to the
umpire in just 2 words.
For the record the fine bottle was the nastiest since Gerry
Beukes’ paint
thinner.
