Greenies One season is over after going down to Prison in the semi final of the cup at JPO on Sunday. In light of the many injuries being carried into the game (made worse by Paul having his hand broken batting early on) it was a brave effort but at the end of the day we didn't put enough runs on the board to defend.
Surpisingly sent in to bat with skies blue and sun beating down we were in early trouble with Rups falling early and Paul being run out. Josh and I both struggled for touch early on, but just when the rebuilding was coming round (2/56 at first drinks) we both played loose shots immediately after the break giving it away to outfield catches.
Tom was unlucky to be picked up by a reflex caught and bowled, Jacko set in at one end while the other end wickets fell regularly. Jacko fell toward the end trying to push the pace to top score with 27 and a freakish run out saw the tail dismissed with a couple of overs to go with the total of 144 on the board.
Fair to say all batsmen suffered from lack of practice with batting not easy with the nature of a slow, low track and slow outfield we were in with a shot, but would need a great start. That's what we got with Rups bowling express with the new ball. 2nd ball of the day was as feisty as they get with Joe leaping high just to get fingertips to it. Clearly the batsman was not up for it and walked across his stumps to leaving leg to be knocked over soon after. Sam trapped the other LBW and we had the start we needed.
Rups and Shaheed went to war and the umpires went childish and it all broke down through the afternoon to become something of a shambles in the middle which didn't help our cause down the stretch with a couple of LBW shouts that were only missing leg and off stumps being vehemently turned down.
Shaheed and Chand were building a strong partnership (though Shaheed was put down with a mistimed catch to cover from off Rups) when Hector came on to find some life in the pitch that was not there before and some inconsistent bounce and soon trapped Chand who had looked very solid. He also bowled Cunningham for just 5 and we were right in it. The other end Josh was bowling very tight and the pressure was on and new batsmen were finding it hard to score.
All the while though Shaheed was accumalating the runs and one bad over from Josh went for plenty and they were edging home. I got a wicket straight away and it seemed they had no batting left despite just 5 down, but while balls continued to beat bat and LBs turned down, we just didn't have enough on the board (a few too many extras), and they got home with overs to spare but didn't really look like they could have got that many more.
Fielding effort was excellent despite the many handicaps. Paul bravely fielded the whole time (after Joe limped off early with a calf strain) with a broken hand and special thanks to Dicky who again showed his heart fielding the entire innings massively hungover and doing a great job. Ledge also toughed it out with a quad strain.
Fine session was as interesting as ever with Ledge bringing a smorgasbord of food and liquor that can be found on the kitchen floor at Sunshine Suites which had many nervous and heading for outdoors "just in case" one of the chuinks should prove a just a little too resilient to going down.
Hector acknowledged the last game for a club stalwart over the last 6 years with Jacko being rolled over. We wish him well with future travels and hope we may see him back season 2009. Also noted the colorful contributions of Ledge and Margison also leaving.
MVP - Jacko
Play of the Day - Rups second ball nasty
COTD - Smith for not bringing his
whites.
